The skinny: An early-season ACC game should be a good gauge as to each teams' relative strengths. Pitt's offense is based around two sophomores, RB James Conner (above) and WR Tyler Boyd, who has a dislocated finger but still is expected to start. Conner also will see time at defensive end. FS Ray Vinopal is Pitt's defensive headliner. BC will use a tailback-by-committee approach this season, and senior C Andy Gallik is the best offensive lineman. BC's defense is a question mark, but keep an eye on senior DE Brian Mihalik (above), whose size stands out.

The skinny: A year ago, Arkansas State went on the road in Week 2 to an SEC venue and took a 38-9 thumping from Auburn. This year's Week 2 SEC foe is the Volunteers, but the Red Wolves should be able to keep this one much closer. Prospect to watch: Tennessee LB A.J. Johnson (above), who played lights out against Utah State in Week 1. ASU receiver J.D. McKissic (above) is a fun player to watch, and could be a test for the UT secondary.

The skinny: If we're going off Week 1 results, this game could be prime upset material. Hawaii pushed Washington to the brink in the opener, jumping out to a 10-0 lead early on behind running back Joey Iosefa (above). Senior quarterback Sean Mannion (above) is Oregon State's headliner. He only looked OK in the team's win over FCS opponent Portland State, with the offense slowing down tremendously in the red zone. A late-night trip to the Islands is always a recipe for an upset, so keep your eye on this one if you can stay up late enough.

The skinny: Arizona seems to have found an answer at quarterback earlier than anybody expected after Anu Solomon led the team to 787 yards of total offense in a rout of UNLV. The Wildcats have one of the deepest wide receiver groups in the country and are led by potential first-rounder Austin Hill. UTSA scored a big, marquee win in their opener at Houston and the senior-laden team -- including QB Tucker Carter -- is not one to overlook as they're the most experienced in all of FBS.

The skinny: This game suddenly has more intrigue after South Carolina's secondary was torched by Texas A&M last week. ECU has a potent passing attack headed by QB Shane Carden (above) and WR Justin Hardy, who is on track to become the NCAA career leader in receptions. ECU OT Ike Harris also has NFL potential. ECU will be without massive NT Terry Williams, and that could hurt against a South Carolina offense that needs to establish the running game. Gamecocks star TB Mike Davis has an injured hip and might not play. South Carolina still will want to run, though, which means a touted line featuring star OT Corey Robinson must play better than it did last week and protect QB Dylan Thompson (above).

The skinny: Texas had some momentum heading into this game based on the way its defense suffocated North Texas in the opener, but some of that optimism was halted when Charlie Strong announced quarterback David Ash would be out. The Longhorns still feature a potent one-two rushing attack with Johnathan Gray (above) and Malcolm Brown, but that might be too much to ask for against a solid BYU team that has aspirations on making noise as an Independent this season. Either way, the new-look Texas defense should prove a stiffer challenge for Taysom Hill (above) and the Cougars' offense than it was last year.

The skinny: With Braxton Miller out for the season, this game looks much tougher for the Buckeyes now. Virginia Tech has one of the best secondaries in the nation, and sophomore CBs Kendall Fuller (above) and Brandon Facyson should be able to handle Ohio State's receivers. Senior DT Luther Maddy is a load up front for the Hokies. Ohio State might have the nation's best defensive line, headed by senior DT Michael Bennett (above) and sophomore DE Joey Bosa. Both teams want to run and want to avoid having to throw, but running room is going to be tough to come by. Don't expect a lot of points.

Wolverines DE Frank Clark and LB Jake Ryan need to play at a high level against Notre Dame QB Everett Golson (above), who was razor-sharp last week against Rice. LB Jaylon Smith and DE Sheldon Day are the Irish's defensive stars.

The skinny: One of two marquee matchups out West, this game will go a long way in seeing who has the chops to challenge Oregon in the Pac-12. Stanford has a veteran group of starters and will no doubt be looking for revenge for last season's loss. USC is coming off a record-breaking win to start the Steve Sarkisian era, and the Pac-12 veteran has had some success against the Cardinal. If for nothing else, follow the lead of NFL scouts and tune in to watch Trojans' defensive lineman Leonard Williams (above) and Cardinal offensive tackle Andrus Peat (above).

The skinny: Saturday's premier game and maybe the best non-conference contest of the season has been eagerly awaited by many ever since it was announced. In addition to pitting two top eight teams against each other, this features one of the best offenses in the country against one of the best defenses. Oregon's Marcus Mariota (above) has been labeled by some as a potential No. 1 overall draft pick, and he'll have a chance to solidify that status against Pat Narduzzi's Spartans defense. On the flip side, Connor Cook (above) has the spotlight on him as he sets out to prove a Rose Bowl isn't the only big game he can win as Michigan State's quarterback.
