Super Bowl rematches
On Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks host the Denver Broncos in a rematch of the Seahawks' 43-8 dump trucking of the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.
This marks just the sixth time in NFL history that the previous season's Super Bowl combatants met for a rematch in the following season. In those games, the Super Bowl winners are 3-2, but are 0-2 when the rematch takes place before Week 9. Here is a look at those Super Bowl rematches.

Super Bowl: Super Bowl XLVIII. The Seahawks dump trucked the Broncos, 43-8, one of the most lopsided Super Bowls ever played. The game opened in disastrous fashion for the Broncos, whose errant snap on the first play from scrimmage resulted in a safety. What followed was a cavalcade of dominance. The Seahawks led 36-0 before the Broncos finally scored. Seattle's masterful defense disarmed Peyton Manning and the highest-scoring offense in league history.
The rematch: This game was everything that the Super Bowl matchup wasn't, providing edge-of-your-seat theatrics before the game was settled in overtime. The Seahawks once again prevailed, 26-20, but they had to break a sweat to do so. After storming out to a 17-3 lead, the Seahawks saw that advantage evaporate as Manning and the Broncos mounted a comeback, which was capped by a touchdown and two-point conversation in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime.

Super Bowl: Super Bowl XXXI. The Packers brought the Lombardi Trophy back home, winning the franchise's first Super Bowl in 29 years. Quarterback Brett Favre threw an 81-yard TD pass to receiver Antonio Freeman, and return specialist Desmond Howard had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as the Packers won 35-21 en route to the franchise's 12th NFL championship (it has 13 now after the events of Super Bowl XLV).
The rematch: Week 9 of 1997 season. On a Monday night at Foxboro Stadium, the Packers reasserted their dominance of the Patriots with a convincing 28-10 victory. Favre had three TD passes, including one to running back Dorsey Levens, who also added a score rushing. The Packers returned to the Super Bowl that season, only to be upset by the Denver Broncos. The Patriots returned to the playoffs but were defeated by the Steelers.

Super Bowl: Super Bowl XXVII. The Dallas Cowboys delivered a third consecutive Super Bowl defeat to the Buffalo Bills in embarrassing fashion, prevailing 52-17. The Cowboys' power trio of quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and receiver Michael Irvin all played a major role in the thrashing. The game, however, is best known for Bills receiver Don Beebe chasing down a showboating Leon Lett and stripping him of the football just short of crossing the goal line for another Cowboys touchdown.
The rematch: Week 2 of 1993 season. The Bills won a tight contest against the Cowboys, 13-10, early in the 1993 season. Emmitt Smith was a holdout in 1993, missing the first two games, and this defeat sent Dallas to an 0-2 start. Dallas would finish the season 12-4 and meet Buffalo again in the Super Bowl. In the only Super Bowl rematch in NFL history, the Cowboys won again, 30-13.

Super Bowl: Super Bowl XIII. The Pittsburgh Steelers edged the Dallas Cowboys, 35-31, in what is arguably one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played. A heavy concentration of to-be Pro Football Hall of Famers (14 players, plus both coaches) added star power in the first Super Bowl that featured two teams that had met before in the Super Bowl. The Steelers' win cemented their status as "The Team of the '70s," while the Cowboys were left to ponder what might have been.
The rematch: Week 9 of 1979 season. Dallas visited Pittsburgh and were held to a field goal in a 14-3 defeat. While the Cowboys returned to the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season, they were upset by the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round.

Super Bowl: Super Bowl XI. The Raiders collected their first of what would be three Super Bowl wins in an eight-year span by throttling the Vikings, 32-14. Running back Pete Banaszak scored twice and defensive back Willie Brown provided NFL Films with one of its signature shots on a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown. However, it was receiver Fred Biletnikoff -- who did not score at all -- who was named the game's MVP. This marked the fourth, and final, Super Bowl appearance for the Vikings, who went 0-4 in such games.
The rematch: Week 13 of 1977 season. Much like in the Super Bowl matchup, the Raiders rolled. Oakland jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead. Receiver Cliff Branch caught two of quarterback Ken Stabler's three touchdown passes. Despite this humbling setback, the Vikings remained a force in the NFC Central, winning the division and advancing to the NFC Championship, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys.

Super Bowl: Super Bowl IV. A year after the startling events of Super Bowl III, the Chiefs evened up the score for the upstart American Football League in the fourth AFL-NFL World Championship Game, defeating the Vikings, 23-7. It was a dominant performance for Kansas City, which limited Minnesota to 67 yards rushing, forced three interceptions and recovered two fumbles.
The rematch: Week 1 of 1970 season. The Vikings exacted a small measure of revenge for their Super Bowl IV humiliation by beating the Chiefs, 27-10, at Metropolitan Stadium in the season opener the following year. While the Chiefs failed to return to the playoffs, the Vikings finished 12-2, but were defeated by the San Francisco 49ers, 17-14, in the divisional playoff round.
