Predictions for top 10 college games of Week 9
What this weekend lacks in matchups between highly ranked teams, it makes up for in potential stumbling spots on the road to the first College Football Playoff. Some top contenders face tricky road tests, with Ohio State visiting Penn State, Mississippi State going to Kentucky and Ole Miss visiting LSU.
Out west, Utah hosts USC in a pivotal Pac-12 showdown. Also, the states of Arizona and Washington renew their long-standing rivalry when Arizona and Arizona State visit Washington State and Washington, respectively.
CFB 24/7 experts Gil Brandt, Bucky Brooks, Daniel Jeremiah, Bryan Fischer, Chase Goodbread and Mike Huguenin have provided their predictions for each game.
Season records entering Week 9:
Huguenin: 57-23
Brooks: 56-24
Goodbread: 55-25
Fischer: 54-26
Brandt: 54-26
Jeremiah: 54-26

Details: Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network
The skinny: Auburn is the better team and should be able to take care of business at home, but a downtrodden Steve Spurrier team can often be a dangerous one. The Gamecocks have the offense to stay in it, but in all likelihood, not the defense. Safety Brison Williams (above) is one of the few defensive bright spots for DC Lorenzo Ward, and he'll have a tall order helping South Carolina's struggling cornerbacks with Auburn's two receivers Sammie Coates and D'haquille Williams (above). Williams, especially, is dangerous on slants and throws over the middle of the field. Other pro prospects to watch: The left side of South Carolina's offensive line (Corey Robinson, A.J. Cann), Auburn center Reese Dismukes, and dual-threat QB Nick Marshall.
Game picks:
Brandt: Auburn, 45-21
Brooks: Auburn, 24-20
Jeremiah: Auburn, 34-27
Fischer: Auburn, 42-27
Goodbread: Auburn, 41-21
Huguenin: Auburn, 45-28

Details: Saturday, 5 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network
The skinny: The Wildcats make the tricky trip to Pullman in a game that should feature plenty of offense since it involves head coaches Rich Rodriguez and Mike Leach. Quarterback play will take center stage, as this is a matchup between two of the top three players in FBS total offense in Wazzu's Connor Halliday (above) and Arizona redshirt freshman Anu Solomon (above). Expect plenty of points and yards, but few defensive stands.
Game picks:
Brandt: Washington State, 38-31
Brooks: Arizona, 40-37
Jeremiah: Washington State, 35-34
Fischer: Arizona, 45-38
Goodbread: Washington State, 38-30
Huguenin: Arizona, 48-38

Details: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
The skinny: West Virginia heads to Dana Holgorsen's former place of employment in Stillwater looking to keep the momentum going from the Mountaineers' upset of Baylor. The Cowboys' defense will likely have its hands full guarding CFB 24/7 Midseason All-American receiver Kevin White (above) and an offense that can beat you a number of ways. On the flip side, another major effort will be needed out of the WVU defense if it hopes to slow down speedster Tyreek Hill (above).
Game picks:
Brandt: West Virginia, 34-30
Brooks: West Virginia, 35-31
Jeremiah: West Virginia, 38-31
Fischer: West Virginia, 38-24
Goodbread: West Virginia, 35-24
Huguenin: West Virginia, 38-34

Details: Saturday, 12 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network
The skinny: This is the first time these two schools will meet in football and an important game in the Big Ten, as each team has just one league loss. Truthfully, Maryland isn't going to win the East Division, but Wisconsin has a shot in the West. Wisconsin has been good coming off a bye week. Maryland needs a big game from WR Stefon Diggs (above), who leads the league with 45 receptions. While the Badgers lead the league in pass defense, they haven't faced a receiver anywhere near as good as Diggs. Wisconsin's offense is all about the run, and TB Melvin Gordon (above) leads the nation in rushing (174.3 ypg) and has a streak of four consecutive 175-yard games. Bad news for the Terps: Their run defense has been lax.
Game picks:
Brandt: Wisconsin, 37-23
Brooks: Maryland, 34-31
Jeremiah: Wisconsin, 31-21
Fischer: Wisconsin, 31-28
Goodbread: Wisconsin, 28-17
Huguenin: Wisconsin, 27-21

Details: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC
The skinny: Michigan State -- which has won four of the past five in the series -- appears to be the most complete team in the Big Ten; Michigan has a horrible offense and an overworked defense. Michigan senior QB Devin Gardner (above) is a high-level athlete, but he remains extremely inconsistent. His counterpart, Michigan State's Connor Cook (above), doesn't "wow" you with any aspect of his game, but he has a nice arm and almost always gets the ball to the right players at the right time. If Michigan can't get any kind of running game going, Gardner is going to be running for his life from the likes of Spartans DE Shilique Calhoun and OLB Ed Davis.
Game picks:
Brandt: Michigan State, 37-14
Brooks: Michigan State, 37-28
Jeremiah: Michigan State, 38-24
Fischer: Michigan State, 35-17
Goodbread: Michigan State, 47-17
Huguenin: Michigan State, 45-17

Details: Saturday, 8 p.m. ET, ABC
The skinny: QB J.T. Barrett (above) and the Buckeyes are riding a school-record streak of four consecutive games with 500 yards of total offense. QB Christian Hackenberg (above) and the Nittany Lions have gained 480 yards total in their past two games. Hackenberg is an elite talent, but he is getting zero help from his line and, thus, the rushing attack. The Nittany Lions have surrendered 20 sacks, which could mean Buckeyes DE Joey Bosa will be living in the backfield. The one positive for Penn State: The defense has been excellent, especially against the run. LB Mike Hull (64 tackles) has been a standout. The higher-ranked team has won 21 of 23 in this series.
Game picks:
Brandt: Ohio State, 34-17
Brooks: Ohio State, 34-24
Jeremiah: Ohio State, 42-28
Fischer: Ohio State, 37-20
Goodbread: Ohio State, 34-13
Huguenin: Ohio State, 31-10

Details: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS
The skinny: Kentucky quarterback Patrick Towles (above) and an improved defense have marked the Wildcats' 5-2 start with nearly 1,700 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, notwithstanding last week's reality-check loss to LSU. MSU cornerback Jamerson Love (above) is one of the SEC's most underrated players, and will be tough for Towles to pick on. As for significant NFL prospects, almost all will be on the Bulldogs' sideline (QB Dak Prescott, WR De'Runnya Wilson, LB Benardrick McKinney, DE Preston Smith). Prescott's push for the Heisman Trophy could pick up even more steam in Lexington, as the Bulldogs have won five straight in this series.
Game picks:
Brandt: Mississippi State, 37-20
Brooks: Mississippi State, 31-28
Jeremiah: Mississippi State, 28-21
Fischer: Mississippi State, 30-26
Goodbread: Mississippi State, 31-20
Huguenin: Mississippi State, 34-24

Details: Saturday, 10:45 p.m. ET, ESPN
The skinny: Apparently fully healthy, Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly (above) will make his first start in a month in a difficult road environment at Washington. Luckily he has Jaelen Strong to throw to, one of the best receivers in the Pac-12 and a future NFL draft pick. While he won't be tasked with stopping Strong directly, keep an eye on stud Huskies linebacker Shaq Thompson (above), who also might see some additional time on offense Saturday night.
Game picks:
Brandt: Arizona State, 31-21
Brooks: Washington, 31-28
Jeremiah: Arizona State, 28-27
Fischer: Arizona State, 30-28
Goodbread: Arizona State, 28-21
Huguenin: Arizona State, 31-21

Details: Saturday, 7:15 p.m. ET, ESPN
The skinny: The Rebels look to stay undefeated in a place they've had very little success: Death Valley in Baton Rouge. Ole Miss will have a decided quarterback advantage in Bo Wallace, who is playing the best football of his career, against struggling LSU quarterbacks Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris. Keep an eye on Ole Miss DE Marquis Haynes (above), who has been a surprise asset as a pass rusher and notched 2.5 sacks last week against Tennessee. LSU left tackle La'el Collins (above), a senior who is drawing attention from NFL scouts, will be dealing with undersized speed rushers in Haynes and defensive end C.J. Johnson, who has a knack for getting to the quarterback himself.
Game picks:
Brandt: Ole Miss, 23-17
Brooks: LSU, 27-25
Jeremiah: LSU, 28-24
Fischer: Ole Miss, 33-13
Goodbread: LSU, 24-21
Huguenin: Ole Miss, 21-13

Details: Saturday, 10 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1
The skinny: In one of the rare Week 9 games involving two ranked teams, USC travels into a difficult environment hoping to stay atop the rugged Pac-12 South standings. Trojans quarterback Cody Kessler (above) will find the competition level ratcheted up considerably after throwing for seven touchdown passes last week vs. Colorado. Nate Orchard (above), who is second in the country in sacks, will no doubt be looking forward to playing on the big stage and getting after a young and inexperienced USC offensive line.
Game picks:
Brandt: Utah, 28-24
Brooks: USC, 31-28
Jeremiah: USC, 31-30
Fischer: USC, 28-24
Goodbread: USC, 30-28
Huguenin: USC, 24-23
