Wild facemasks of the NFL
We've likely reached the end of the Bane-like facemasks in the NFL, as the league banned the use of non-standard/overbuilt facemasks Monday. Take a look at wild facemasks of the NFL.

DeMarcus Ware is the latest player to embrace an enhanced facemask, which will feature eight horizontal bars and a decidedly Bane-like look.

As if Ray Lewis wasn't intimidating enough, the future Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker wore this battle-worthy helmet during the Baltimore Ravens' run to glory in Super Bowl XLVII. (Perry Knotts/NFL)

Justin Tuck debuted this busy grill in 2012 after growing tired of opponents yanking him by the mask. Tuck explained that the facemask wasn't inspired by superheroes, but rather by old-school trains. (AP Photo/Damian Strohmeyer)

Peyton Hillis sported argubly the wildest football facemask to grace the cover of "Madden". Sadly, his forgettable 2011 season in Cleveland couldn't back up the cover nod or cool grill. (AP Photo/Tony Dejak)

LaDainian Tomlinson might have started the recent trend to customize the helmet grill, sporting a look that quite possibly was inspired by the Transformer known as Optimus Prime. (AP Photo/Tom Hauck)

Scott Player has the distinction of being the last NFL player to wear the one-bar facemask, which were restricted by the league in 2004. Thanks to being covered by a grandfather clause, Player got to keep his single-bar helmet until his final season in 2007. (AP Photo/Robert E. Klein)

Gary Anderson was one of the last to sport the single-bar facemask in the NFL, and even had the unique opportunity to wear a grey facemask while his Titans teammates were stuck with dark blue. (AP Photo/David Stluka)

Starting with the 1994 Chargers, Swayne represented three different teams (also 1998 Broncos and 2000 Ravens) in the Super Bowl with this intimidating grill. (National Football League)

Joe Theismann was the last non-kicker to sport a single-bar facemask, staying with the open look to help his vision so he could better spot receivers downfield. (AP Photo/P.Binks)

The facemask sported by Lester Hayes helped add to the intimidating look of the sticcum-coated Raiders great who teamed with Mike Haynes to form one of the NFL's all-time greatest cornerback tandems. (National Football League)

This facemask was unique to Lynn Dickey when he guided an explosive Packers offense in the early 1980s, including a 1983 season in which he threw for 4,458 yards (second only in team history to Aaron Rodgers' 4,643 set in 2011). (AP Photo/Mone)

In the late 1970s, John Williams fashioned his own wild, homemade facemask that appeared to be put together with masking tape. (National Football League)

If it wasn't weird enough to see Joe Namath in the uniform of the Los Angeles Rams in 1977 instead of the familiar New York Jets, he kept his robust (for a quarterback) multi-bar facemask. It was a rare look for a quarterback at the time, but later was adopted by other passers, most notably Dan Marino. (National Football League)

Larry Csonka's romping-stomping style was astetically enhanced by his helmet's bull ring nose protector. (National Football League)

Y.A. Tittle -- here with 49ers teammate Joe Perry in 1953 -- was one of a number of players to wear a clear Lucite facemask as facial protective gear evolved in the game during the 1950s. (AP Photo)

Joe Perry's clear facemask might just be the most intimidating look ever sported by an NFL player. Nicknamed "The Jet," Perry helped revolutionize facemask style en route to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. (AP Photo)

In 1953, a gruesome hit to Otto Graham's chin that required 15 stitches helped inspire the development of the facemask. Graham has since been credited as the first NFL player to wear a modern facemask (before his time, leather helmets -- though extremely rare -- could be equipped with facemasks). (AP Photo)
