Hall of Famer Bill Parcells, known as “Tuna,” coached 19 years in the NFL, going 172-130-1 with four teams: the Giants, whom he led to two Super Bowl titles, the Patriots; Jets; and Cowboys. A two-time NFL Coach of the Year, Parcells, a New Jersey native, was a master of turning around losing franchises. Parcells took the Patriots to a Super Bowl, and later the Jets to the AFC Championship, each in the 1990s. “You don’t get any medal for trying something,” he said once. You get medals for results.” A great motivator with a wise guy’s wit, Parcells was ruthless and confrontational – it wasn’t uncommon for he and a player to yell at each other – and his teams reflected that spirit in their aggressive style of play defensively. Known for his mind games, Parcells thrived on conflict (he once threw iced tea at a Boston reporter) and banter, but he could also be empathetic and loyal, declaring his love for a player not long after tearing him to shreds.
