John Madden
As an all-time great coach, revolutionary football analyst, and the inspiration of a famous video game series, John Madden is as “larger than life” as football personalities come – a true pop culture phenomenon. In 10 years coaching the Oakland Raiders, Madden won a Super Bowl and – overseeing tough teams of renegades and misfits – compiled a 103-32-7 record; his .759 win-loss percentage is the highest among coaches with 100+ wins. After becoming a color commentator in 1979, Madden’s fame continued to grow. Using a telestrator to draw markings and diagrams on the TV screen, Madden broke down games analytically – in ways analysts had never done before. A winner of 16 Emmy Awards, Madden issued commentary peppered with descriptions such as “Boom!”, and each season, he named a highly-anticipated “All-Madden Team,” comprised of his favorite, blue-collar-type players. The video game, Madden NFL, was named after Madden – and he was fearful of airplanes, traveling instead to games on a plush bus called the “Madden Cruiser,” which was a former rehabbed Greyhound in the style of an apartment.
