Mark Gastineau
Defensive end Mark Gastineau was among the best pass rushers of the 1980s, but destructive behavior often overshadowed his play. Six-foot-five, 266 pounds and incredibly fast, Gastineau made five straight Pro Bowls and had 22 sacks in 1984, an NFL record that stood for 17 years. Part of the Jets’ successful defensive line known as the New York Sack Exchange, Gastineau’s wild and prolonged sack dances angered opponents, started brawls, and led to an NFL ban on such celebrations. Born in Oklahoma in 1956, the Jets drafted Gastineau in the second round in 1979. With long dark hair and a mustache, Gastineau drove a Rolls Royce and was a celebrity about town, often frequenting trendy Manhattan clubs in his fur coat. Gastineau made headlines for dating actress Brigitte Nielsen in the 1980s. But Gastineau also had a bad temper, used steroids, was once involved in a brawl at Studio 54 for which he was convicted of assault, and served nearly a year at Rikers Island prison for violating his probation following a domestic assault. After his football career, Gastineau became a professional boxer, winning nine fights, although some of them were fixed. To this day, he remains one of the Jets’ all-time most popular players; his 74 sacks since they became an official stat in 1982 remain a team record.
