Shannon Sharpe
Shannon Sharpe won three Super Bowls during his NFL career, and was one of the greatest tight ends – and biggest trash talkers – ever to play professional football. A Chicago native who played at Savannah State, Sharpe was a seventh round draft pick of the Broncos in 1990. Over 14 seasons – 12 with Denver and two playing with Baltimore – Sharpe made eight Pro Bowls by putting up massive numbers for a tight end: more than 10,000 yards receiving, 815 catches, 62 TDs. Sharpe’s playful but brash demeanor were on display in 1996, while his Broncos were blowing out the Patriots at New England. Sharpe took a red telephone on the sideline and said into the receiver: “Mr. President, we need the National Guard. We need as many men as you can spare because we are killing the Patriots.... They need emergency help, please.” (The Patriots advanced to the Super Bowl that year, and Sharpe later apologized for the incident.) After his playing career, Sharpe’s talkative, opinionated nature helped him transition into sports TV. He became a commentator on CBS’ “The NFL Today” and now co-hosts “Skip and Shannon: Undisputed,” a sports debate show. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011.
