Bronko Nagurski
Hall of Famer Bronko Nagurski was one of the biggest and most powerful runners in the first half of the 20th century. At a burly 6-foot-2 and 226 pounds, Nagurski was huge for his fullback position in the 1930s and led the Bears to back-to-back NFL titles in 1932 and 1933. Also a star on special teams and defense (“a bone-crushing linebacker,” according to the Football Hall of Fame), Nagurski – who was born in 1908 in Rainy River, Ontario, Canada and played collegiately at Minnesota – left football in 1937 to become a pro wrestler full-time. After beating the legendary Lou Thesz and capturing several world wrestling titles, Nagurski returned to the Bears for one season in 1943 and helped them win another championship. He wrestled until he was over 50; as an older adult, he moved back to the northern Minnesota town of International Falls, where he grew up. There, he worked as a fishing guide and owned a service station.
