Ickey Woods

Ickey Woods, a former Cincinnati Bengals running back, invented one of the most popular end zone dances of all time: “The Ickey Shuffle.” In 1988, Woods’ rookie season in which he scored 15 touchdowns and led the NFL with 5.3 yards per carry, Cincinnati went 12-4 and advanced to the Super Bowl. Throughout that season, the 6-foot-2, 231-pound Woods, a second round draft pick out of UNLV, capped his TD runs with the Ickey Shuffle, which began with three dance steps to the right, three to the left, and another three to the right. Next, Woods hopped thrice backward, spiked the ball, and twirled a finger like a lasso while yelling “Wooo!” The rather clumsy-looking jig, which his teammate Boomer Esiason has since described as “a cross between the hokey pokey, the Macarena, and the Humpty Dance,” became a sensation among Bengals fans and around the country. But the Ickey Shuffle – and Woods’ career – were short-lived. In 1989, Woods tore his ACL, and by age 25, he was out of the NFL. To support his family, he went door-to-door selling meat; often, a shocked homeowner would recognize Woods and request that he perform the Ickey Shuffle. In 2014, Woods portrayed himself in a Geico commercial in which he executed the Ickey Shuffle inside a supermarket. “It’s something that will always be a part of me,” Woods said in 2016 of his signature dance.
