Bum Phillips
There’s never been another NFL personality quite like Bum Phillips, who coached the Oilers and Saints in the 1970s and 80s. Born in 1923 in Orange, Texas, Phillips resembled a character out of a Western movie: he had a thick Texas twang, chewed on wads of tobacco which he’d spit on the sidelines, and wore cowboy boots and a ten-gallon hat over a crew cut. Known as a straight shooter with a unique vocabulary (“They say the harder we played, the behinder we got,” he once said), he was beloved in Houston. Phillips once said of the Dallas Cowboys "They may be America's Team,' but we're Texas's team," as he led the Oilers to 2 consecutive AFC Championship appearances. Phillips, who was fired after the 1980 season with a 55-35 career Oilers’ record, moved on to New Orleans, whom he coached from 1981 to 1985. A father of NFL coach Wade Phillips, Bum lived out his final years on his Texas horse ranch, dying at age 90 in 2013.
