Tim Rossovich

"Nothing was too outrageous for Timmy to try." - Ray Didinger

Tim Rossovich, who played linebacker and defensive end for the Eagles, Chargers, and Oilers, was one of the more bizarre NFL characters of the 1960s and 70s. Born in 1946 in Palo Alto, Rossovich was an All-American at USC and a first round pick of the Eagles in 1968. A practical joker and constant attention-seeker, the 6-foot-4, 245-pound Rossovich commonly lit himself on fire at parties. He also opened beer bottles with his teeth, slept on the floor, and jumped off rooftops. His favorite book was the Guinness Book of World Records. Once, during a major rainstorm, he used a locker room table as a surfboard and paddled it through the streets. Other antics of Rossovich’s included eating a spider he’d spotted in the locker room, and diving naked into a birthday cake. “I have more energy that I know what to do with,” he told Sports Illustrated in 1971. On the field, Rossovich, who made a Pro Bowl in 1969, regularly got into skirmishes with opponents and teammates alike. After retiring in 1976, he became a Hollywood stuntman and then a character actor, often portraying a bad guy with a mustache.
