Ricky Williams, winner of the 1998 Heisman Trophy and the all-time NCAA Division I-A rushing leader upon his graduation from the University of Texas, had a successful but strange NFL career, mostly for the Dolphins. After getting selected fifth overall by the Saints, Williams – a 5-foot-10, 230-pound running back – appeared on the cover of ESPN magazine wearing a wedding dress alongside Mike Ditka, who’d traded eight draft picks for him. During his career, in which he rushed for over 10,000 yards – including a career-best 1,853 to go along with 16 rushing touchdowns during an All-Pro season for Miami in 2002 – Williams used marijuana to help with sleep, anxiety, and pain. After initially retiring in 2004, he returned to the game in 2005. Williams missed the entire 2006 season due to a suspension for a fourth failed drug test, and retired for good after the 2011 season. Since then, Williams, who has described himself as “a healer and a philosopher,” has studied Chinese medicine, conducted astrology readings, and operated a company that creates and sells cannabis-based products.
