Bob "The Geek" St. Clair

"He always would like to shock guys by eating raw meat, or meat with blood on it." - Monty Stickles

At 6-foot-9, Bob St. Clair, an offensive tackle for the 49ers from 1953 to 1963, is the tallest Hall of Famer in NFL history. A superb blocker with toughness and speed, St. Clair – a San Francisco native whom the team drafted in the third round – made five Pro Bowls. St. Clair, who also blocked 10 field goals in 1956 had some peculiar habits off the field such as eating raw meat, and was nicknamed “The Geek” by teammates. But he was highly respected, serving as team captain, and at one point in the early 1960s was even elected mayor of Daly City, near San Francisco. St. Clair, who once lost five teeth after being kicked, yet continued playing, called modern-day players “candy asses.” The athletic field at a rebuilt Kezar Stadium, the former 49ers’ home, is currently named after St. Clair, who died in 2015.
