Kevin Greene was an unlikely Hall of Famer: A college walk-on who was later the 113th overall pick in the NFL Draft, the 6-foot-3, 247-pound linebacker went on to become one of pro football’s most productive pass-rushers ever. Born on the last day of July in 1962, Greene attended Auburn before being selected by the Rams in the fifth round of the 1985 NFL Draft. He started no games in his first three seasons, but suddenly broke out in 1988 with 16.5 sacks, followed by another 16.5 the following year. Greene, a passionate, vocal, and joy-filled player with long blonde hair, became a five-time Pro Bowler who, with the Steelers in 1994 and the Panthers in 1996, led the NFL in sacks. His 160 career sacks rank third in NFL history. “I don’t play this game for any other reason than just sheer love and passion,” he once said. “That’s it. That’s why I play.”
