Brian Dawkins
Brian Dawkins was a nine-time Pro Bowl safety who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018. Born in Jacksonville on October 13, 1973, Dawkins went to Clemson and was taken 61st overall by the Eagles in the 1996 NFL Draft. Philadelphia’s defensive leader for over a dozen seasons, Dawkins was a feared hitter often described by his nickname – and on-field alter ego – “Weapon X.” His on-field transformation has been likened to that of a superhero (Weapon X was designated its own locker, in which superhero figurines were displayed); he was known for bursting out from the locker room tunnel, all hyped up and doing a bear crawl. During games, he unleashed primal screams and expressive, often tough-to-comprehend rituals to pump himself up. “You have to have a screw loose to play defense,” he would say. “I just so happen to have about three or four of them loose.” Dawkins played his final three seasons for the Broncos, making a Pro Bowl in 2011 at the age of 38.
