Jared Allen
Jared Allen, a 6-foot-6, 255-pound defensive end for the Chiefs, Vikings, Bears, and Panthers, was a four-time All-Pro who had 136 career sacks over 12 seasons. Born in Dallas in 1982 and raised on a ranch in California, Allen played at Idaho State before being selected by Kansas City in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft. A relentless pass-rusher, he twice led the NFL in sacks, including 22 with the Vikings in 2011. Off the field, he was known for his outsized personality and his hairdos, including a mullet. (“The mullet isn’t just a hairstyle,” Allen has said. “It is a way of life.”) In a tweet announcing his retirement in 2016, he wrote, “Riding off into the sunset,” accompanied by a video in which Allen, wearing his cowboy hat, galloped away on a horse. He is currently training with some former NFL players to qualify as an Olympic curler. “As you get older, you have to always challenge yourself,” he recently said.
