Johnny Unitas

"If Johnny U. was playing today, he'd be the best quarterback in the game." - Dan Fouts

Johnny Unitas, the Baltimore Colts’ QB in the 1950s, 60s, and early 70s, revolutionized the quarterback position in the NFL. A three-time MVP who led the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns four times, Unitas guided the Colts to victory in the "Greatest Game Ever Played" in 1958, and later quarterbacked Baltimore to a Super Bowl title in 1970. His smooth and efficient techniques were more effective and aesthetically pleasing than QBs who’d come before him. As a result, Unitas, who wore black high tops and had a crew cut, was worshipped and copied by many aspiring young players – and he greatly influenced the next generation of star quarterbacks, from Joe Theismann to Joe Montana. A Pittsburgh native, Unitas was selected in the ninth round of the 1955 Draft out of Louisville. Unitas was selected to 10 Pro Bowls and became the first to pass for 40,000 yards in NFL history.
