"I think I came at a perfect time for a lot of the young guys to say, 'Hey I can do this.'" - Doug Williams

Doug Williams was the first African-American quarterback to start in a Super Bowl, a game which his Washington Redskins won, 42-10. Facing the Broncos in Super Bowl XXII on January 31, 1988, Williams threw four touchdowns as part of a Super Bowl record 35-point 2nd quarter, passed for a then-record 340 yards, and was named MVP. The 17th overall pick in the 1978 NFL Draft from Grambling State, Williams led the Bucs to two NFC Central titles before jumping to the USFL for two seasons in the mid-1980s. Williams returned to the NFL as a backup with the Redskins in 1986, but became the team’s starter under Coach Joe Gibbs by the 1987 playoffs – just in time for his historic postseason effort.
