Dr. James Andrews

Many NFL players owe their hope and productivity following injuries to Dr. James Andrews, an orthopedic surgeon who, over the past several decades, has been the go-to doctor for professional athletes requiring surgery. As an example, during Super Bowl XLIV in February 2010 between the Colts and Saints, nearly half of the starters had been operated on by Andrews. He had become a pioneer in sports medicine in part through his use of arthroscopic surgery to repair joints, which was less invasive and led to quicker recovery times than completely opening up athletes’ knees. Among Andrews’ many accomplishments have been repairing the left knee of Adrian Peterson, who rushed for over 2,000 yards a year later, as well as performing successful surgeries on Peyton and Eli Manning, Drew Brees, and Brett Favre, among countless others. Now 77, Dr. Andrews is the Medical Director of the Andrews Institute for Orthopedic and Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Florida, a 127,000 square foot rehabilitation clinic and surgery center, and he is the co-founder of a sports medicine center in Alabama.
