Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder was a Las Vegas oddsmaker who would became one of football’s most colorful characters in the 1970s and 1980s as a co-host for “The NFL Today,” the CBS weekly pre-game show. A high school dropout and son of Greek immigrants, Snyder made it big in Las Vegas as a gambler and oddsmaker; soon, he had a syndicated column and published betting odds in newspapers across the country. CBS hired the flamboyant Snyder as co-host of the “The NFL Today” in 1976 alongside Brent Musburger, Irv Cross, and Phyllis George. Snyder, who spoke in an unpolished manner, saw his profile rise as fans looked forward to his weekly NFL predictions. In 1988, he was fired for making racist comments against African-American athletes during an interview, which tainted his legacy.
