First Night Game

"When it's a night game, the fans all know that this must be a big game." - Al Michaels

On Nov. 6, 1929, eight days after the U.S. stock market had crashed, the NFL’s first ever night game was held. It took place in front of 6,000 fans at Kinsley Park Stadium in Providence, Rhode Island, and pitted the Providence Steam Roller against the Chicago Cardinals. Under recently-installed floodlights, which were “just as good as daylight for the players,” one newspaper reported, the game was played with a ball that was painted white and “had the appearance of a large egg.” The Steam Roller, which normally played in an arena built for bicycle racing called the Cycledome, had moved the contest to Kinsley Park Stadium, a minor league baseball park, because its regular field was flooded. The Steam Roller lost the re-scheduled contest to the Cardinals 16-0. "Nobody thought we could pull it off," assistant Steam Roller general manager Pearce Johnson said, years later.
