Tight End - Head Coach

Mike Ditka

"The tight end position is so much more recognized today then it was back then." - Mike Ditka

Mike Ditka helped revolutionize the NFL’s tight end position in the 1960s and would become one of the most legendary sports figures in the history of Chicago. Known as “Iron Mike,” Ditka was a hard-nosed, 6-foot-3 Pennsylvania native whom the Bears selected fifth overall in 1961. He was among the first tight ends who was excellent at catching passes as opposed to just blocking; in his rookie season he caught 56 passes for over 1,000 yards. During his Hall of Fame playing career, Ditka went on to make five Pro Bowls, win an NFL Championship with the Bears, and help the Cowboys to a Super Bowl title. Ditka’s fiery, hard-nosed style later translated into coaching, where he led the 1985 Bears, one of the most dominant teams in NFL history, to a Super Bowl victory over the Patriots. As the gum-chewing, mustached face of the Chicago franchise, Ditka would become a cultural icon in the city.
