Fran Tarkenton
Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton was one of the most creative QBs of the 20th century; during the 1960s and 70s his hectic and scrambling style contrasted sharply with the norm of the stationary pocket passer. Tarkenton, who was the first QB of the expansion Vikings during his rookie season of 1961, would zigzag around or run in circles behind the line of scrimmage – sometimes for extended periods of time – to create space for throwing or to run it downfield. His 3,674 rushing yards were the most by a QB until it was broken by Randall Cunningham in the 1990s. In 13 seasons with Minnesota and five with the Giants, he won 124 games and threw for 342 TDs and over 47,000 yards, both NFL records when he retired in 1978. Six feet tall and a third round draft pick out of the University of Georgia, he went on to make nine Pro Bowls, win a league MVP, and lead the Vikings to three Super Bowl appearances.
