Ronnie Lott
Ronnie Lott was one of the toughest and most versatile defensive backs ever to play in the NFL. A Hall of Famer who made 10 Pro Bowls at three separate positions (strong safety, free safety, and cornerback), the hard-hitting Lott helped the 49ers win four Super Bowls in the 1980s. At 6 feet tall and 203 pounds, Lott, who was the eighth overall pick by San Francisco in 1981, returned three interceptions for touchdowns in his rookie season, and was a first-team All-Pro. Lott led the NFL in interceptions twice, with 10 in 1986 and eight in 1991, his first season with the Raiders. “He’s a middle linebacker playing safety,” Tom Landry, the Cowboys’ Hall of Fame coach, said once of Lott. “He’s devastating. He may dominate the secondary better than anyone I’ve seen.” In 14 seasons – 10 with the Niners and two each with the Raiders and Jets – Lott totaled 63 interceptions, tied for eighth most all time, and over 1,100 tackles.
