As head coach of the Baltimore Colts and New York Jets in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Weeb Ewbank won both an AFL and an NFL championship, the only person ever to do so. He coached in – and was victorious – in some of the most NFL’s most historic games, including the “Greatest Game Ever Played” in 1958 and Super Bowl III, in which Joe Namath guaranteed victory. As such, Ewbank helped amplify the pro game’s popularity and shape its development in the modern era. Born in 1907 in Indiana, Ewbank, himself a college QB in the 1920s, was an assistant under the legendary Browns coach Paul Brown. After becoming a head coach, Ewbank oversaw the emergence and success of two all-time great QBs: Johnny Unitas and Namath.
