AFC Championship Game - "The Drive"
Beyond statistics and physical talent, great quarterbacks are ultimately judged by something deeper and less tangible: an ability to lead and inspire teammates with a game in the balance. There’s probably no better example of such a feat than the brilliance exhibited by John Elway on “The Drive” during the Broncos’ AFC Championship game against the Browns on January 11, 1987. Both franchises were desperate for victory: the Broncos had lost in their only Super Bowl appearance nine seasons earlier, while the Browns, who the previous week had won their first playoff game since 1969, had never made a Super Bowl. This game, played on a cold Sunday afternoon at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, went back-and-forth: the Browns led 7-0 after a quarter, the game was tied, 10-10, at halftime, and Denver led, 13-10, after the third. Ten straight Browns points, however, on a field goal and a 48-yard Bernie Kosar touchdown pass, put Cleveland up 20-13 in the fourth. With 5:32 left, the Broncos had the ball at their own 2 yard line. Calmly, Elway orchestrated a 15-play, 98-yard drive – which took five minutes and included a 20-yard completion on a third and 18 – that ended with a 5-yard TD throw to Mark Jackson. In overtime, Elway led a 60-yard drive that resulted in a 33-yard Rich Karlis field goal and Denver won the AFC title, 23-20.
