Super Bowl LII - "Philly Special"
A trick play to end the first half and a gallant fourth quarter effort lifted the Eagles to their first Super Bowl title on February 4, 2018. The Eagles were underdogs against the defending champion Patriots but started off strong, leading 15-3 midway through the second quarter. Nine straight Patriots points, though, shifted the momentum toward New England as halftime approached. The Eagles drove from their own 30 to the Patriots’ 2, but New England made two key stops and Philadelphia faced a fourth-and-goal from the 1. Instead of kicking a field goal, the Eagles ran an unusual trick play called the “Philly Special” which resulted in a touchdown reception by of all people, the quarterback Nick Foles – and Philadelphia led, 22-12, and had re-captured the momentum. The Eagles held onto their lead until the fourth quarter, when Tom Brady led the Patriots on a 10-play, 75-yard drive for a touchdown to pull New England ahead, 33-32. Foles, though, led the Eagles on their own 14-play, 75-yard drive that ate up over seven minutes – and that culminated in a 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 38-33. With 2:16 left, a Brady comeback felt inevitable, but he was strip sacked by defensive end Brandon Graham and the Eagles recovered the ball. Philadelphia kicked a field goal, made one final stop, and upset the Patriots, 41-33.
