Super Bowl XXXIV - "One Yard Short"
Entering the 1999 NFL campaign, the Rams had posted nine straight losing seasons. The St. Louis franchise’s last winning record came in the 1980s, when they were based in Los Angeles. The Tennessee Titans, meanwhile, hadn’t had a winning season since 1993 when they were the Houston Oilers. But both teams found themselves in Super Bowl 34 – played at the Georgia Dome on January 30, 2000 – and it would be settled by a matter of inches. The Rams were in control most of the way: after a touchdown pass by Kurt Warner midway through the third quarter, they led, 16-0. But the underdog Titans scored 16 straight points thanks to two Eddie George rushing touchdowns and an Al Del Greco field goal with just over two minutes left. Less than 20 seconds later, Warner and Isaac Bruce connected on a 73-yard TD to make it 23-16, St. Louis. But the Titans, led by Steve McNair, quickly drove downfield from their own 12. On the final play of the game from the Rams’ 10, McNair completed a pass to Kevin Dyson, who was tackled by Rams LB Mike Jones one yard shy of the end zone as time expired – and St. Louis survived to win its first Super Bowl.
