The NFL’s longest game ever, a Divisional playoff matchup between the Dolphins and Chiefs at Kansas City's Municipal Stadium, was played on Christmas in 1971 and lasted over 80 minutes. The Hank Stram-coached Chiefs, two years removed from a Super Bowl, were facing a Miami team whose coach was the great Don Shula. After the Chiefs opened up a 10-0 lead after one quarter, the contest was a mesmerizing back-and-forth affair whose generals were Hall of Fame quarterbacks Bob Griese and Len Dawson. After Miami tied the game at 10 by halftime, and each team found the end zone in the third, Kansas City went ahead, 24-17, in the fourth. With 1:25 left, the Dolphins’ Griese threw a touchdown pass to Marv Fleming to force overtime. In OT, both teams failed to convert a field goal, and midway through the second overtime, Miami’s Garo Yepremian redeemed himself with a 37-yard field goal and the Dolphins were victorious, 27-24. The Dolphins eventually lost in the Super Bowl to the Cowboys, but the next season, Miami won its first of two straight Super Bowls. including the only perfect season in NFL history.
