Super Bowl XXXII - "This One's For John"
On January 25, 1998, at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Hall of Fame quarterbacks Brett Favre and John Elway faced off in Super Bowl XXXII. Favre’s Packers, the defending Super Bowl champions, had rolled through the playoffs, winning their two games by an average of nearly two touchdowns. The Broncos, on the other hand, were a Wild Card team that had eked out their last 2 wins by a combined 7 points – and were double-digit underdogs against Green Bay. On top of that, the Broncos had failed in each of their four Super Bowl trips – and Elway, who was 37, had lost three of those by a combined 96 points. Favre came out hot, throwing a 22-yard touchdown to Antonio Freeman on the opening drive. But the Broncos came back, scoring 17 unanswered points, including a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Elway. The Broncos still led, 24-17, after three quarters, but Favre and Freeman connected on another touchdown early in the fourth to tie the game. In the final minutes, Elway completed a 23-yard pass and running back Terrell Davis, who had 157 yards rushing, scored his third touchdown as the Broncos won, 31-24 and Elway – who led the Broncos to a second straight Super Bowl championship the following season – retired a winner.
