In a Monday Night Football clash of 5-1 teams in the AFC East on October 23, 2000, a Dolphins victory over the Jets at Giants Stadium looked inevitable. Miami led, 20-0, late in the first half, and then 30-7 after three quarters. Frustrated and disappointed Jets fans filed out of the Meadowlands. But suddenly, the Jets’ players sprung up from the dead. A 30-yard touchdown pass from Vinny Testaverde to Laveranues Coles made it 30-13. The Jets scored four minutes later on a 1-yard TD pass by Testaverde, and then four minutes after that on a John Hall field goal to make it 30-23. Less than two minutes later, Testaverde threw a 24-yard TD pass to Wayne Chrebet to tie it at 30. The Dolphins’ defense had collapsed, while the Jets’ defense had forced punt after punt. But just seconds later, Miami’s Jay Fiedler found Leslie Shepherd on a 46-yard pass play to reclaim the lead. Testaverde led the Jets down the field yet again, culminating in a 3-yard TD pass – Testaverde’s fourth in the quarter – to Jumbo Elliott, an eligible tackle. Following an interception, the Jets won it in overtime, 40-37, on a 40-yard Hall field goal. Testaverde finished with 378 yards passing and 5 TDs. Despite all that, the Jets finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs, while the Dolphins won the AFC East with an 11-5 record.
