Super Bowl XLII - "The Helmet Catch"
Aside from the Jets’ postseason triumph over the Colts in 1969, the Giants’ victory against the Patriots on February 3, 2008 was perhaps the most shocking upset ever in a Super Bowl. The Giants were major underdogs against New England, which had gone 16-0 during the regular season and with a victory would clinch the NFL’s first perfect season since 1972. New York, a Wild Card team with a 10-6 regular season record, had won their last two playoff games by just 7 total points. But none of that mattered during Super Bowl XLII as the teams swapped leads throughout in a defensive struggle. The Giants led 3-0 after a quarter, the Patriots led 7-3 at halftime, and after a fourth quarter touchdown pass each by Eli Manning and Tom Brady, New England was ahead, 14-10, in the final minutes. With possession and under two minutes left, the Giants were approaching midfield but faced a third down and 5. That’s when receiver David Tyree, with the assistance of his helmet, made an improbable 32-yard catch of a Manning pass after the QB had eluded the Patriots pass rush. Then, with 35 seconds remaining, Manning tossed a 13-yard touchdown to Plaxico Burress and the Giants won, 17-14.
