NFC Championship - "The Chilling Championship"
Four decades after the Ice Bowl, the second coldest game in the history of Lambeau Field was played – with a Super Bowl berth at stake. At kickoff of this showdown between the Packers and Giants on January 20, 2008, the wind chill was negative 23 degrees. Hand warmers were distributed to fans, some of whom witnessed the beer in their bottles freeze. Television cameras captured Giants head coach, Tom Coughlin, with cheeks that had turned red from the cold. The game itself was a back-and-forth affair: the Giants led 3-0 after one quarter; the Packers, thanks to a 90-yard touchdown pass from a gloveless Brett Favre to Donald Driver, were ahead 10-6 at halftime; and by the end of the third quarter, New York had regained a 20-17 lead. A field goal by the Packers’ Mason Crosby tied the game at 20 in the fourth; in overtime, a Brett Favre pass was intercepted and four plays later, the Giants’ Lawrence Tynes kicked a 47 yard field goal to win it. “I didn’t notice the weather at all,” Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw said afterward. “It only lasted three hours, but this championship lasts a lifetime.” Two weeks later, the Giants spoiled the Patriots perfect season to win Super Bowl XLII.
