Super Bowl XVII - "John Riggins Run For The Ages"
For three quarters of Super Bowl XVII, which was played at the Rose Bowl on January 30, 1983, the Washington Redskins had never led the Miami Dolphins. The Redskins had gone down early after Miami quarterback David Woodley and receiver Jimmy Cefalo connected on a 76-yard touchdown pass. At one point, in the second quarter, Washington had managed to tie the game at 10 on a Joe Theismann touchdown throw. But that hadn’t lasted long, as the Dolphins’ Fulton Walker returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. Heading into the fourth quarter, Washington trailed, 17-13. Then, on a fourth down and short from near midfield, Theismann handed a ball off to the Redskins’ 33-year-old running back, John Riggins, who exploded for one of the greatest – and most clutch – runs in Super Bowl history. Riggins barreled over a Dolphins linebacker and ran all the way into end zone for a 43-yard score. After the Redskins scored again to clinch the Super Bowl, 27-17, Riggins was named MVP.
