There was no shortage of offensive fireworks on the evening of October 17, 1983 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. The Packers and Redskins combined for 95 points – a Monday Night Football record that would last 35 years. The game’s first touchdown, by the Packers, came on a fumble return; the second, by the Redskins, came on an offensive fumble recovery in the end zone. Two touchdown passes by Packers quarterback Lynn Dickey helped Green Bay take a 24-20 lead into halftime. The Packers ran for another TD in the third, taking an 11-point lead, but the Redskins stormed back with two field goals and a touchdown throw by Joe Theismann to pull ahead, 33-31. In a wild and whiplash-inducing fourth quarter, the teams exchanged leads five more times, with the game winner coming on a field goal by the Packers’ Jan Stenerud for a 48-47 Packers win. Theismann finished the game with 398 yards passing; the Packers’ Lynn Dickey with 387. That season, the Bart Starr-coached Packers finished 8-8 while the Redskins lost in the Super Bowl.
