Montana TD Pass to Taylor in SB XXIII

"Who said the game had to be 60 Minutes? Couldn't it have been 59 minutes?" - Jerry Springer

With Super Bowl XXIII on the line, quarterback Joe Montana found an unexpected receiver – and its result cemented the 49ers as the team of the 1980s. Thirty-nine seconds remained in the game, played on January 22, 1989 at Miami’s Joe Robbie Stadium, and the 49ers had the ball at the Bengals’ 10. A natural and obvious target for Montana would have been Jerry Rice, the Hall of Fame receiver who had already caught 11 passes for 215 yards. Montana went back to throw, calmly stood in the pocket, and threw a ball into the middle of the end zone intended for receiver John Taylor, who’d yet to catch a pass all game. The ball was perfectly placed: it whizzed just past the outstretched hand of a diving Bengal and into the arms of Taylor, who received it in stride for the touchdown and a 20-16 San Francisco victory. The 49ers would win the next year’s Super Bowl, too becoming the NFL's first repeat champions since the 1978 and '79 Steelers.
