Elway Completes "The Drive" on TD Pass to Jackson
The play that capped “The Drive,” the Broncos’ historic 15-play, 98-yard possession in the fourth quarter of the 1986 AFC Championship game, combined a missile-of-a-throw with a nifty catch that broke the hearts of a Browns franchise seeking their first Super Bowl appearance. On January 11, 1987 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, with 42 seconds left in the game, the Broncos had the ball at the Browns’ 5, down by 7 points. From the shotgun, Denver quarterback John Elway caught the snap and whipped a low and accurate fastball into the end zone and away from the defense that was caught by a sliding receiver, the 5-foot-9 rookie Mark Jackson. After an extra point, the Broncos tied the game, then won it in overtime, 23-20. It would be the first of two thrilling Denver wins – and grueling defeats for the Browns – in as many years in the AFC Championship Game.
