Randy Moss Lateral Behind the Back for TD
On October 19, 2003, a spectacular play by wide receiver Randy Moss was a high point in what, for a while, felt like a potentially historic Vikings’ season. Playing against the 5-1 Broncos on a Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis, the Vikings had a 5-0 record and were tied at 7 with the ball in the waning seconds of the first half. Facing a third down and 24 from their own territory, QB Daunte Culpepper took the snap, looked for receivers, and then escaped rolling right. He threw a bomb to the 6-foot-4 Moss, who caught the ball at the Denver 10. Moss, surrounded by several Broncos, was immediately tackled – but as he was being brought down, a split second before his body hit the turf, Moss lateraled the ball blindly and behind his head to running back Moe Williams, who scampered into the end zone. Moss finished with 10 receptions for 151 yards and the Vikings won 28-20 to remain undefeated. After that game, though, the Vikings went into a tailspin, losing their next four games and ultimately missing the playoffs. Nonetheless, Moss had arguably his best season, with 1,632 yards receiving and 17 touchdowns.
