Houston Oilers
The 1961 Houston Oilers won their second straight AFL championship thanks to a high-scoring passing attack led by George Blanda, the future Hall of Fame QB. Playing in front of big home crowds at Jeppesen Stadium, the Oilers led the league with over 36 points per game and threw for over 313 yards per contest – over 100 more yards than the second-highest team. The 34-year-old Blanda won the league MVP and threw for an AFL-best 3,330 yards and 36 TDs in just 11 games started. His weapons included all-Pro wide receivers Charley Hennigan, who still holds the Oilers/Titans single-season record of 1,746 yards receiving, and Bill Groman, who led the AFL with 17 TD catches. After beating the Oakland Raiders 55-0 in the season opener, the Oilers lost three straight games and tied once under Coach Lou Rymkus, who was fired. His former assistant, Wally Lemm took over, and Houston won its final nine regular season games and captured the East Division title with a 10-3-1 record. The Oilers then beat the Chargers in a low-scoring championship, 10-3. Defensively, the 1961 Oilers ranked second in the AFL in points allowed.
