The 1996 Green Bay Packers went 13-3 in the regular season, led the NFL in both scoring offense (28.5 points per game) and scoring defense (13.1 per game), and outscored their three opponents in the playoffs 100 to 48. Brett Favre, who threw for 3,899 yards and a league-high 39 TDs, won his second of three straight MVP awards. Wide receiver Antonio Freeman had nine TD catches while Pro Bowl tight end Keith Jackson caught ten. The defense starred Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie White, who had 8.5 sacks, and All-Pro safety LeRoy Butler, who intercepted five passes. On special teams, Desmond Howard led the NFL with three punt returns for TDs. In Super Bowl XXXI, Howard became the first special teams player to be named MVP, after returning a kickoff 99 yards for a TD in a 35-21 win over the Patriots. It was the Packers' first Super Bowl title in three decades.
