The 1968 New York Jets of the AFL won Super Bowl III in a shocking upset over the NFL’s Baltimore Colts after Joe Namath guaranteed victory. Namath, the Hall of Fame QB, had won the AFL’s MVP award by throwing for 3,147 yards and 15 TDs and leading the Jets to an 11-3 record. Despite losing to the Raiders in the "Heidi" game, the Jets won in the rematch, 27-23 over Oakland in the AFC Championship. During the regular season, the Jets ranked 2nd among AFL teams averaging nearly 30 points per game. Under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Weeb Ewbank, the Jets’ offense starred Pro Bowler George Sauer (1,141 yards receiving); Hall of Famer Don Maynard (1,297 receiving yards, 10 TD catches); Pro Bowl halfback Emerson Boozer (5 TDs) and fullback Matt Snell (747 yards rushing, 6 rushing TDs). The Jets defense featured All-Pro defensive end Gerry Philbin and Pro Bowl linebacker Al Atkinson.
