Baltimore Colts
The 1958 Baltimore Colts defeated the Giants 23-17 in the first sudden death NFL Championship game, also known as "The Greatest Game Ever Played". During the regular season, the 9-3 Colts finished first in points per game (31.8) and second in points allowed (16.9). They were coached by Hall of Famer Weeb Ewbank, and their offense was led by Hall of Fame QB Johnny Unitas, who led the NFL with 19 TD passes. Fullback Alan Ameche, who scored the game-winning TD run in the NFL Championship, had a Pro Bowl season with 791 yards rushing and nine total TDs, while Hall of Fame halfback Lenny Moore put up massive numbers. Moore rushed for 598 yards, a league-high 7.3 yards per carry and 7 TDs, along with 938 yards receiving and seven TD catches. Hall of Fame end Raymond Berry had an All-Pro year, tying for an NFL-best 56 receptions and nine TDs. On defense, Hall of Fame defensive end Gino Marchetti had an all-Pro season, as did defensive tackle Gene Lipscomb. Safeties Andy Nelson and Ray Brown had eight interceptions each.
