Kansas City Chiefs
The 1969 Kansas City Chiefs proved the AFL was a force to be reckoned with, as an AFL team won the Super Bowl for a 2nd consecutive season. Despite Len Dawson missing 5 games due to injury, the Chiefs had a 11-3 regular season record. Kansas City's defense allowed under double digits in each of three playoff wins, including a 23-7 victory over the NFL’s Vikings in Super Bowl IV. Coached by the Hall of Famer Hank Stram, the Chiefs led the AFL in scoring defense, passing defense and rushing defense. Rookie cornerback Jim Marsalis had a Pro Bowl season, cornerback Emmitt Thomas finished 2nd in the NFL with nine interceptions and Hall of Fame safety Johnny Robinson had an All-Pro season with eight picks. Other defensive Pro Bowlers included Hall of Fame defensive tackles Curley Culp and Buck Buchanan; and the Hall of Fame linebackers Bobby Bell and Willie Lanier. Offensively, the Chiefs ranked second in the AFL with 25.6 points per game, and featured four Pro Bowl players on offense: Hall of Fame QB Len Dawson, who won Super Bowl IV MVP, fullback Robert Holmes; tackle Jim Tyrer; and guard Ed Budde.
