"In the bay area all we talk about is startups, but here we were probably the original startup." - Ronnie Lott

Two years after a 2-14 record, the Bill Walsh-coached 49ers won their first Super Bowl in 1981 with the NFL’s best regular season record at 13-3. San Francisco was led by the Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana and featured the Pro Bowl receiver Dwight Clark (85 catches, 1,105 yards receiving) and the receiver Freddie Solomon (969 yards receiving, 8 TDs). The Niners defense held their own, ranked second in the league in points allowed, at just under 16 points per game. The rookie cornerback and future Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott had seven interceptions, while free safety Dwight Hicks had a Pro Bowl season with nine picks. After closing out the regular season on a five-game winning streak, the Niners beat the Giants, 38-24 in the NFC Divisional Round and eliminated the Cowboys, 28-27 on a late fourth quarter touchdown play – now known as “The Catch” – by Clark from Montana, in the NFC Championship Game. The 49ers then beat the Bengals, 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI.
