Dallas Cowboys

"We were known as a team that couldn't win the big game." - Rayfield Wright

The 1971 Dallas Cowboys vanquished playoff demons after winning Super Bowl VI. Labeled "Next Year's Champions," Dallas entered the season making the playoffs 5 straight years from 1966-70, with no Super Bowl title to show for it. But the 1971 Cowboys, coached by Tom Landry, had an 11-3 record and won the Super Bowl by a score of 24-3. For Dallas, which led the NFL in scoring at 29 points per game, Hall of Fame QB Roger Staubach tossed 15 TDs passes and just 4 interceptions, running back Duane Thomas led the NFL with 11 rushing touchdowns, and Hall of Fame receiver Bob Hayes had 840 yards receiving and eight TD receptions. The Cowboy defense, which ranked seventh in points allowed with 15.9, included several Hall of Famers such as the cornerbacks Mel Renfro and Herb Adderley and defensive end Bob Lilly. Dallas rolled into the playoffs with seven straight wins. In three playoff games against the Vikings, 49ers and Dolphins, the Cowboys allowed a combined 18 points. In the Super Bowl, Dallas’ final touchdown was scored by the 32-year-old Hall of Fame tight end Mike Ditka, who along with teammates Forrest Gregg and Dan Reeves would later become future NFL head coaches.
