"That defense is the best defense I've ever seen." Jon Hein

The 1974 Steelers, under revered owner Art Rooney Sr., went 10-3-1 and won their first Super Bowl in franchise history. The Steelers, who were coached by Hall of Famer Chuck Noll, ranked first in the NFL in takeaways, with 47, and were No. 1 in fewest yards allowed. Mean Joe Greene, the Hall of Fame defensive tackle who comprised part of the infamous Steel Curtain, won defensive MVP honors. Defensive end L.C. Greenwood was an All-Pro as was linebacker Jack Ham, who intercepted five passes. The Steelers defense was even better in the playoffs, holding teams to just 33 points in three games. In Super Bowl IX against Minnesota, which the Steelers won, 16-6, Pittsburgh’s offense was led by 1,000-yard rusher and game MVP Franco Harris. The future Hall of Famer carried the ball 34 times for 158 yards and a rushing touchdown. This would be the first of four Super Bowl titles for the Steelers in the 1970s.
