Philadelphia Eagles
The 1960 Philadelphia Eagles went 10-2, featured the league MVP in quarterback Norm Van Brocklin, and beat a Vince Lombardi-coached Packers team in the NFL Championship that included Hall of Famers Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, and Jim Taylor. Van Brocklin, who was 34 and in his 12th and final NFL season, threw for a career-high 24 TDs and led the Eagles to several 4th quarter comeback wins. The Eagles, who finished the regular season with the third highest-scoring scoring offense and the most TD passes in football – at one point went on a nine-game winning streak. They had three Pro Bowl options for Van Brocklin to throw the ball: future Hall of Famer Tommy McDonald; split end Pete Retzlaff and tight end Bobby Walston. During the NFL Championship on a freezing-cold day in Philadelphia, the Eagles trailed, 13-10 in the fourth after a Starr TD pass. But the Eagles’ Ted Dean returned the kickoff 58 yards and then scored on a 5-yard TD run and the Eagles won 17-13. Ironman Chuck Bednarik played 58 minutes on both offense and defense in the Eagles victory.
