St. Louis Rams
In 2001, the St. Louis Rams were poised to win a second Super Bowl in three seasons. They posted the NFL’s best record, at 14-2 (8-0 on the road), and had the league’s highest-scoring offense, with more than 31 points per game. For the third straight year, a Rams player won the league MVP with Kurt Warner earning 2001 honors. Future Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk led the NFL in total touchdowns (21) and yards per carry (5.3) while the team’s Pro Bowl wide receivers, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt, combined for over 2,400 receiving yards. In the NFC Divisional Round, the Rams blew out Green Bay, 45-17 and beat the Eagles, 29-24 to win the NFC Championship. In Super Bowl XXXVI, the Rams were 14-point favorites against the Patriots, who’d won two AFC Playoff games by a combined 10 points. But behind a GW drive led by QB Tom Brady, New England beat St. Louis, 20-17 on an Adam Vinatieri 48-yard field goal as time expired.
