Chicago Bears

"We had a heck of a Football team." - Mike Ditka

The 1963 Bears won the NFL Championship on the back of the league’s best defense. George Halas’ Bears gave up just 10.3 points per game, the fewest in football, while allowing 17 total touchdowns. They won the NFL West Division with a 11-1-2 record and faced the Giants – by far the league’s best offensive team– for the league crown. The Bears defense combined for 36 interceptions, tied for most in the NFL. On offense, the Bears were led by 24-year-old, future Hall of Fame tight end Mike Ditka, who caught 59 passes for 794 yards and eight TDs. In the title game against the Giants at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, QB Billy Wade ran for two touchdowns and the Bears defense intercepted five Y.A. Tittle passes in a 14-10 win.
